Fire and sound rating in the same door: what to know

A door can have requirements for both fire and sound. Here is what that means for selection, installation and documentation in commercial buildings.

Several requirements for the same door

In offices, schools and hotels it is common for a door to meet requirements for both fire resistance and sound reduction. The requirements are set in the project, typically in the fire strategy and in the acoustic requirements for the room.

The whole construction counts

Fire and sound properties apply to the complete door construction: leaf, frame, seals, fittings and joints. Replace a single component and the approval can lapse. All parts must therefore be selected and delivered as a set.

Installation decides the result

A door can have the right properties on paper and still fail if it is not installed correctly. Joints, seals and the connection to the wall are decisive for both fire and sound.

It can still look good

Fire and sound requirements do not mean the door has to look technical. The leaf can be made in timber veneer or other finishes to match the rest of the interior.

How to get started

Send the requirements set in the project and the number and sizes of the doors. We supply what is required in Denmark and advise on the choice of build up.
